It is the month of Imjin (壬辰). For me, 壬 Water represents the Hurt Officer (傷官). They say unexpected events arrive during a Hurt Officer transit. They were right. The bus stop confirmed it.

April 14, 2026, 9:45 in the morning. I arrived at the city bus terminal fifteen minutes early to catch an intercity bus. I thought I had time to spare. Then an elderly man — somewhere in his eighties — held out his phone. KakaoTalk had disappeared, he said. He must have accidentally deleted it. Could I reinstall it?

I was a little caught off guard, but told myself it was nothing difficult. Just reinstall the app. I was wrong.

The reinstall was only the beginning. The login screen appeared, and with it came a gauntlet. He didn’t know his ID. We went through identity verification. He said he only remembered part of his password — the numbers. It was rejected. We tapped reset. A verification code arrived. He looked at the screen, found the number, entered it again. We barely made it through. Then came the backup prompt: send a backup from your old device. He had no idea what that meant. I had no idea how to explain it. We used up all fifteen minutes.

The bus arrived. My bus. There was no time to check if he was okay. The backup data may have been wiped. That thought stayed with me even after the doors closed.

The Problem Wasn’t Him

Think about it for a moment. The English keyboard is unfamiliar. Special characters are a mystery. The concept of a username is foreign to his generation. The problem was never him. The platform simply never included him in its design. KakaoTalk claims to be Korea’s national messenger — used by 47 million people. And yet, for an elderly man who can’t log back in on his own, it’s hard to know whether any of the platform’s so-called improvements have reached him at all.

There Are Answers. It’s a Question of Will.

The solutions aren’t complicated. Use the national ID number to detect age, then automatically switch users over 60 to a simplified login flow. Replace passwords with familiar numeric patterns or image sequences. Or take a more direct route — education programs like KakaoTalk’s Senior Digital School already exist. This isn’t a technology problem. It’s a question of will. The Korean government has already committed 36.75 billion won over five years, starting in 2025, to develop digital literacy tools for elderly citizens. If the public sector is moving, the national platform should be too.

If everyone uses it, everyone should be able to use it.
